Devandran Karunakaran pursued a law degree at the prestigious University of Leicester, renowned for its research and advanced learning opportunities. Throughout his academic journey, he demonstrated exceptional skills in contract law, delving deep into the intricacies of legal and commercial agreements between businesses. His interest also extended
to public international law, or The Law of Nations, which encompasses the norms and legal guidelines vital for maintaining international relations.
The diversity at Leicester University left a lasting impression on him, fostering lifelong friendships from various backgrounds and ethnicities. These relationships proved significant, as one of his university housemates later played a crucial role as the best man at his wedding. He actively participated in the university's rugby team, showcasing his skills and commitment at the university level. After completing his post-graduate studies, he relocated to London, diving into the legal profession and securing a coveted training contract with a leading UK-based international law firm.
The path to becoming a UK solicitor is highly competitive, with training contracts being a scarce and sought-after opportunity. His quick acquisition of a training contract with a renowned law firm marked a significant milestone in his career. Choosing to stay in London, he spent nearly 13 years in the city, forming a myriad of professional connections and personal alliances. His journey also took him to Piraeus, Greece, where he continued to hone his legal expertise. He specialized in ship finance law, offshore energy, and renewables, blending his legal acumen with commercial awareness to best serve his clients.
In 2020, he took on a new challenge as an advisor to the board of directors at PT Indo Energy Solutions, based in Indonesia. Despite being rooted in Singapore, his commitment to the role saw him frequently commuting to various parts of Indonesia. After his return to Singapore in 2015, his life took a romantic turn when he met Cornelia, his future wife, who was on secondment from Germany. Devandran has since developed a deep connection with Halle, Germany, Cornelia's hometown, considering it his second city.
