I am a patent lawyer with over 25 years' experience in patents. In that time I have been involved in almost all aspects of patents, from cross-border patent litigation, arbitration and contentious work, to patent drafting, prosecution and licensing. Having been involved in patent legislative projects in Brussels I frequently write and present
on the Unitary Patent and Unified Patent Court, and advise extensively on each.
I am dual-qualified as a Solicitor-Advocate, with rights of audience before all the civil courts of England and Wales and as a European Patent Attorney before the EPO. My practice includes both contentious and non-contentious patent matters, including several recent cases before the High Court in London and oppositions/patent prosecution before the EPO. My technical expertise is in all areas of the physical sciences, especially (recently) mobile telephony, standard-essential patents (SEPs) and software patents, but also including communications, navigation, optics, interferometry, horology and printing.
Since 2009 I have served on the EQE committee in Munich assessing and admitting new candidate patent attorneys at the EPO.
I started in 1989 as a patent examiner in Physics at the EPO in Munich. After completing an MBA in 1995 the EPO appointed me as head of technical cooperation for states of central/eastern Europe joining the European Patent Convention with a budget of €14 million. From 2002 to 2005 I was Head of the EPO's bureau in Brussels, working with European institutions on EU legislative projects, such as the Community Patent (which became the Unitary Patent and Unified Patent Court (UPC)) and the proposed directive on computer-implemented inventions. Since then I have been based in London and working mainly as a patent litigator and European Patent Attorney, working mainly in the area of mobile telephony.
I have published many articles on patent-related issues. Working languages: English, French and German (plus a good knowledge of Italian.)
