David Riedel is a Co-founder & the Managing Director of AI. SpaceFactory, a multidisciplinary design agency that explores the intersection of architecture and technology. In addition to his role as a project architect, David leads the day-to-day operations of the firm which, since its inception at a co-working hub in 2017, has grown to include
50 employees with offices in New York, Shanghai, Barcelona, and Hong Kong. David gained his expertise in the business of architecture at MR Architecture+Decor and later at KPF, firms whose global reach allowed him to practice in New York, London, Beijing, and Shanghai. As an Associate Principal at KPF, David was an integral part of several major projects, with total development area in the tens of millions of square feet, most notably Hudson Yards in New York, Canary Wharf in London, The Genesis Center in Beijing, and most recently Crystal Plaza in Shanghai. These opportunities provided David with a deep understanding of the complexities of large projects, the mechanics of construction and the metrics of value. Since its founding, AI. SpaceFactory has made rapid progress in both aspects of its practice, with several mixed-use and tall building projects underway in major cities across Asia and the United States, totaling over fifteen million square feet in design and construction, and with government grants to research and develop next-generation responsive environmental control systems, and top awards by NASA for its design of a 3D-printed vertical habitat for MARS - the second phase of which is now under prototype construction. David attained his bachelor’s degree in political science at Carleton College, and his Masters in Architecture at Yale, with the belief that architecture can provide even greater opportunities to build a positive future, in very literal and concrete terms. He is fluent in Mandarin and English and is a registered Architect in the State of New York.
