Dr. David Jang is the founder of Olivet University. A devoted Christian leader, theologian, and educator, he has dedicated his life to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Kingdom of God. He began mission efforts from the ground up, often traveling on foot and using digital media to reach people in difficult and restricted
regions. Through Olivet University, he focused on training disciples and leaders, preparing them to carry out the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19).
David Jang was born in 1949 and pursued higher education with dedication. He earned his Bachelor of Theology and Master of Divinity from Hanshin University, followed by a Master of Arts in Communications from Yonsei University. Later, he completed his Ph.D. in Public Administration of Social Welfare at Dankook University. He was guided by mentors such as Dr. Ralph D. Winter, a well-known American missionary, and Dr. Jang-sik Lee, a respected teacher and missionary leader.
In 2004, he established Olivet University in San Francisco in a small basement. He chose the city for its diversity, which is reflected in the faculty and students. Under his leadership, the university expanded from its theological roots to include schools of music, journalism, art and design, technology, business, and language education. In 2005, it moved into the former UC Berkeley Downtown Extension Campus. By 2009, it earned accreditation from the Association for Biblical Higher Education. David also served as International President while building global outreach and partnerships, including joining the North American Council of the World Evangelical Alliance in 2007.
Alongside his education, he made significant contributions to Christian media. He founded outlets such as Christian Today, Christian Daily Korea, and Christianity Daily International. He also helped establish The Christian Post. Christian Daily International was honored by the Evangelical Press Association in both 2024 and 2025 for journalistic excellence. He also serves as President of the Holy Bible Society, advancing access to the Bible through digital platforms.
His influence extends to mission work as well. Dr. Jang founded Apostolos Missions and multiple mission organizations, committed to evangelism and disciple-making worldwide. He established Diakonos, focusing on deacons, and encouraged both frontline missions and business as a means of mission. He also held leadership roles, including serving as the 88th president of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Korea.
A life of generosity has marked his journey. After completing his doctorate, he started a church and donated all its assets. He has since supported and educated students and families in need. He often reflects on 2 Corinthians 8:9, emphasizing the importance of humility and service to the poor.
Outside of ministry, he is a husband, father of two sons, and grandfather. He enjoys golf, swimming, tennis, and reading. David Jang continues to mentor, teach, and minister, dedicating his life to serving Christ and the church.
