David Janeson splits his time between Winnipeg, Manitoba, and his cabin on the western shore of Lake Winnipeg, in picturesque Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park.

Together with his wife, Lori, Janeson owns Gull Harbour Marina, a small seasonal resort and marina near his Lake Winnipeg home. He devotes the bulk of his time to making improvements at

Gull Harbour Marina and supporting local charities and public initiatives, including the Maskwa Project and Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park.

David Janeson is a steward of environmental initiatives on and around Lake Winnipeg, which faces persistent threats from agricultural runoff, invasive species and climate change.

When Janeson isn’t lending a hand at Gull Harbour or supporting causes dear to his heart, he enjoys the bounteous outdoor resources just beyond his doorstep. In summer, he’s an avid mountain biker and kayaker (though he admits that Lori is far more adept than he); in winter, he plies local Nordic ski trails and unwinds in his ice fishing hut.

David Janeson’s Work in the Community

David Janeson embraces the important work of the Maskwa Project, a four-decade-old nonprofit founded to “promote education and demonstration of energy conservation, environmental stewardship and appropriate technology.” Its 53-acre rural campus serves as a conference and retreat center for large and small groups, including corporate cohorts, youth organizations, nonprofits and informal clubs and gatherings.

Janeson is looking forward to the completion of the Maskwa Project’s three-year plan. The plan’s initiatives include the renovation and modernization of the retreat center, the expansion of recreation amenities and opportunities on and around the center’s grounds, and the installation of renewable energy technology (including a solar array) to reduce and eventually eliminate the center’s reliance on external infrastructure.

As a Scouts Canada leader, Janeson also supports the efforts of Maskwa Scouting, an adjacent retreat for Scout groups. Maskwa Scouting guests use the facility as a low-cost camping site and jumping-off point for backcountry hikes, canoe trips and other activities in the surrounding forests and waters.

David Janeson and New Iceland

Janeson’s Icelandic ancestry puts him in good company in his corner of the world. He and Lori live in New Iceland, the center of Icelandic culture and heritage in Canada.

More than 25,000 people of Icelandic descent live in southern and central Manitoba, or roughly 35 percent of all Canadians who can trace their roots back to Iceland. New Iceland is one of the most important hubs of the modest Icelandic diaspora: Were it part of Iceland itself, the region would increase the tiny country’s population by 10 percent.

Janeson sympathizes with anyone who wishes to raise cultural awareness of New Iceland’s history and stimulate outside interest in this unique corner of Canada.

David Janeson’s Vision for Gull Harbour Marina

The Janesons devote a great deal of their time to the refurbishment of Gull Harbour Marina. The resort features a 120-seat restaurant with an outdoor patio and lake views; a boat dock and marina with overwinter storage and a machine shop open for repairs as needed; and 13 guest rooms in various configurations. Guests use the resort as a jumping-off point for exploring the lake by boat, biking along the ever-expanding shore trail network and hiking in the backwoods.
