Dr. David Hanekom is Chief Medical Officer at SPH Analytics, headquarted in Alpharetta, Georgia.
Prior to SPH Analytics he served as the Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Management of Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota, where he supervised a spectrum of medical management activities, including utilization review, case
management, mental health services, chiropractic services, medical policy, pharmacy, wellness, quality assurance, referral management and health informatics. Hanekom joined BCBSND in 2007 as a medical director in Medical Management. Dr. Hanekom designed and implemented the nationally acclaimed MediQHome Quality Program in North Dakota.
Before joining Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota, Hanekom had been an internal medicine physician at Sanford Southpointe Clinic in Fargo, where he was involved in ambulatory and hospital-based internal medicine. He also practiced palliative care in the Palliative Care Unit at Sanford South University, and was Director of Chronic Disease with a focus on ambulatory diabetes care throughout the health system.
A native of Cape Town, South Africa, Hanekom grew up in South Africa and attended the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He earned his medical degree at the University of Witwatersrand medical school and received post-graduate training in family medicine at the Medical University of Southern Africa and in internal medicine at the University of North Dakota (UND) School of Medicine & Health Sciences in Grand Forks. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences.
