David Amaryan is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Balchug Capital, the global investment management firm. He has over 17 years experience in investment and capital markets, focusing mainly on global multi-asset investing for HNW and institutional investors. David Amaryan has previously worked at Alliance Bernstein, Citigroup, Troika
Dialog and Copperstone Capital, before founding and embarking on his present role at Balchug Capital.
David Amaryan founded Balchug Capital as an alternative investment manager that brings together a unique combination of deep knowledge of the Russian capital markets and business environment with international, institutional quality asset management expertise. The focus of investment activities has been primarily on the Russian market, as well as the broader CIS region, where the company uses its expertise to carefully navigate the excessive policy volatility and legal regime instability that characterises the region.
Balchug draws on 10 years experience of managing assets for institutions, family offices and high net worth individuals (HNWIs). Between 2010 and 2016 the firm went through a significant growth phase, during that time surpassing assets over $350 million.
Balchug has ambitious expansion plans for the future as the investment environment in Russia is expected to improve.
Previously, David Amaryan worked at Troika Dialog, a major multinational investment banking and asset management firm, which today is a subsidiary of Sberbank(CIB), between 2005 and 2009. Between 2004 and 2005, he was engaged in a private banking role with HNWIs at Citigroup in Moscow. Before making the move to Moscow, he worked in New York at renowned value investor Alliance Bernstein between 2001 and 2003. Throughout his career, David attributes his success to a cautious yet contrarian approach of taking calculated risks, as well as by having an eye for undervalued stocks, which allowed him to successfully navigate both the dotcom bubble and the 2008 recession.
David Amaryan was born in Yerevan, Armenia and lived there until the age of 15 before moving to the United States to finish his secondary education through a scholarship. He completed a BSc. in Finance and International Business at Miami University of Ohio. After completing his studies and starting his career in New York, David decided to continue developing his expertise in Moscow. At present, he resides with his family in Moscow.
