Chris is focused on the design and efficacy of Authess’s authentic assessment activities. He is the Amgen Professor of Biology and former Provost of MIT. He is a dedicated educator of genetics and other problem-based courses, which inspired his development of simulators and other innovative tools for digital education. Before becoming provost,
Chris served for eight years as head of MIT’s Department of Biology. He joined the MIT faculty in 1991, after earning his AB in biochemistry from Harvard University and his PhD in biology from MIT. Chris completed his postdoctoral training at the University of California, Berkeley with Randy Schekman. In 1999 Chris was named a MacVicar Fellow, an MIT honor reflecting outstanding undergraduate teaching, mentoring, and educational innovation. He is co-author of a widely used textbook, Molecular Cell Biology. Chris has earned honors including a Markey Scholarship (1990–96), a Searle Scholarship (1992–96), the Whitehead Career Development Professorship (1994–97) and election as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2011).
