Caty graduated in Biology from the University of Barcelona in 1993 and obtained a PhD in Cell Biology and Pathology from the same University in 2001 (Figure 1). She carried out her PhD research at the IRO, Institut de Recerca Oncològica, under the supervision of Xavier Estivill and Melanie Pritchard. Her study of the genomic organization of
chromosome 21 in the context of Down syndrome resulted in the discovery of new genes implicated in the disease. In 2001, she was awarded a Marie Curie Industry Host Fellowship to carry out postdoctoral studies as a Team Leader at Aventis Pharma (currently Sanofi) in Paris. She was involved in the characterization of a new animal model in which to study Alzheimer disease (AD). In particular, she focused on the role of PSEN1 (presenilin 1) signaling in AD. The results derived from this period resulted in several publications and a patent.
