Bryan Berger is Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Lytos Technologies, where he leads the scientific vision behind the company’s mission to harness biology as a practical, scalable alternative to traditional chemical solutions. His work centers on translating fundamental biological insight into deployable technologies, including the
breakthrough invention of a novel anti-biofilm enzyme platform designed to disrupt and remove persistent microbial pathogens.
Dr. Berger is also a Professor of Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Virginia, where he heads the Berger Lab. His academic research spans biochemistry, synthetic biology, and bio-based solutions to complex real-world challenges, work that directly informs and strengthens Lytos’ scientific foundation.
Across his academic and translational career, Dr. Berger has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and his research has been cited over 2,500 times. His contributions have been recognized with multiple honors, including the University of Virginia School of Engineering’s Invention of the Year Award (2025), the University-wide Award for Public Impact Research (2022), the Charlottesville Business Innovation Council’s Innovator of the Year Award (2022), and Bayer’s global Grants4Ag Award (2021–2022). His work has been featured in major media outlets, including The New York Times, and he serves as an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Synthetic Biology.
Dr. Berger earned his BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware, and completed postdoctoral training in Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining the University of Virginia, he served as an Associate Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Lehigh University.
