Bruce Eaton is the EVP, CTO and CBO at Editas Medicine. He previously worked as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Velocity Sciences, an emerging industry leader in cancer diagnostics. In addition, Bruce Eaton fulfills similar roles at i2 Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a provider of lead optimization and hit discovery technology for
pharmaceutical companies. At i2, he oversees daily operations while also identifying strategic partnerships for the company. His companies play an integral role in creating new technological tools for pharmaceutical drug discovery and clinical development.
Prior to joining the i2 team, Bruce Eaton functioned as the chief operating officer of SomaLogic, Inc., a proteomics technology developer. He spearheaded business development initiatives and directed corporate strategic planning. He managed the company’s strategic direction of partnerships with companies like Otsuka, Novartis, and Quest. Dr. Eaton set the course for the proteomic array and life sciences tools business, which continues to be a significant financial driver for SomaLogic.
Over his 30-year career in biotech, Dr. Eaton has consulted for numerous companies and provided strategic advice in developing lead compounds into therapeutics. Early in his executive career, he served as vice president of chemistry at NeXstar Pharmaceuticals, where he managed a team of 50 scientists developing the first successful aptamer (RNA) IND for the company. The product was approved by the FDA and is now known by the trade name Macugen, which was marketed by Pfizer as a treatment for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Dr. Eaton also cofounded Invenux, which generated drug discovery leads. He served as the company president securing $8 million in Series A financing, recruiting executive leadership, and assembling a prestigious scientific advisory board.
Bruce Eaton holds a PhD in organic chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, and B.S. degrees in chemistry and biology from the University of Oregon. In total, he has been an inventor on more than 80 patents awarded worldwide, including 35 issued in the United States. Dr. Eaton’s current board memberships in addition to his companies include the Colorado Bioscience Association, the Colorado Institute for Drug, Device and Diagnostic Development, Galaxy Ophthalmics, and Lumos Technology.
