Bobby Kotick is the Founder and former Chief Executive Officer of Activision Blizzard. In December 1990, while pursuing a foothold in the video game industry, Mr. Kotick purchased a controlling stake in Mediagenic. A few months later, he assumed the role of CEO and promptly restored the company’s original brand name, Activision. The company also returned to video game publishing and acquired nine development studios from 1997 to 2003.
Activision experienced strong growth in the early 2000s through studio acquisitions and intellectual property development. Soon after, Mr. Kotick expressed interest in acquiring Blizzard Entertainment, a gaming company owned by the French media company Vivendi. In 2008, Mr. Kotick engineered a merger between the companies, forming Activision Blizzard, where he assumed the CEO role.
By merging Activision’s top-selling portfolio of console and handheld games with Blizzard Entertainment’s leading PC and online subscription franchises, Activision Blizzard became the largest, most profitable pure-play interactive entertainment software publisher in the world.
In January 2022, Microsoft announced its interest in acquiring Activision Blizzard. Mr. Kotick orchestrated the deal, and Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard for nearly $69 billion. After the acquisition, Bobby Kotick left the company in December 2023.
In addition to his responsibilities as the longtime CEO of Activision Blizzard, Bobby Kotick has led numerous philanthropic efforts. Mr. Kotick co-founded the Call of Duty Endowment in 2009. The organization aims to help veterans find quality jobs after returning from service. Under Mr. Kotick’s continued leadership as Co-Chairman, the Call of Duty Endowment has assisted more than 125,000 veterans in securing jobs.
Channeling a lifelong relationship with art, Bobby Kotick has been involved in improving the accessibility of art for all people. He is the Vice Chair of the board for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, a position he has held since 2012.
Mr. Kotick has also served as a board member for several educational institutions. He is a current member of the board of trustees for Harvard-Westlake School and served as a board member for The Center for Early Education for more than a decade.
