On Christmas Day in 1866, thirteen white leaders of the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Church met to form the Board of Trustees for the establishment of The Centenary Biblical Institute of the Methodist Episcopal Church to train young African-American men for the Methodist ministry. They started with a budget of $5,000. They chose to name
the institute in honor of the 100th or Centennial anniversary of the Methodist Episcopal Church—thus the name Centenary Biblical Institute. They were led in their efforts by Bishop Levi Scott (shown above), who had presided at the founding meeting of the Washington Conference.
