Since 2017, Bert Pijls is the Chief Executive of Calisen, a leading owner and manager of essential energy infrastructure assets, where he is responsible for the business’ overall strategic and commercial direction. Bert previously worked at Calvin Capital as a CEO. He attended Nyenrode Business University.
Bert led the company’s acquisition of
Wigan-based Lowri Beck, aiming to create an end-to-end market offering that comprises the installation, servicing, managing and funding of domestic meters and that will be available to all energy suppliers and new market entrants. This will provide a platform for the future funding, deployment and management of a wider range of digital energy assets, including battery storage and EV charging infrastructure.
Before Calisen, Bert Pijls had served as CEO of Hellenic Bank Plc, a leading financial institution in Cyprus. He was the first CEO of any bank to be approved under the European Single Supervisory Mechanism. During this time, he also served as Chairman of Hellenic Alico Life Insurance, the life insurance company of Hellenic Group, created through the strategic partnership of MetLife Alico and Hellenic Bank in 2000, and as Chairman of Pancyprian Insurance, the general insurance company of Hellenic Group which became part of the business in 1999.
Bert Pijls built his career in the financial services sector, particularly at Citigroup where he had several roles. These included the position of CEO at Egg Banking Plc, one of the first digital banks in the UK, and later that of Country Manager for the Czech Republic where he turned around the consumer franchise business to deliver high double-digit revenue growth. Moreover, Bert spent 10 years working for Citigroup in Germany, Belgium and the US. In 1999, Bert took over as Executive Vice President, Strategic Planning, of the New York-based internet financial services start-up Moneyunion Inc.
In addition to his work in financial services, Bert has experience in the energy sector as MD of Customer Service and Commercial for British Gas/Centrica.
Bert Pijls holds a Bachelor’s degree from Nijenrode University in the Netherlands as well as a Master’s degree in International Management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Arizona, USA.
