He served as Minister for Trade of Korea (2011-2013) and Ambassador-at-Large for International Economy and Trade (2013-2014). He also served as Chairman of the Korea International Trade Commission. Prior to this, he taught at Georgetown University, worked as a senior research fellow of the KDI and served as the Vice President of the KIEP. He was a
visiting professor at Stanford University and Sciences Po and a visiting scholar at the IMF. He also worked on the international commerce issues as a senior economist in the Office of the President of the Republic of Korea. He graduated from Seoul National University and he obtained a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
