Born on September 3, 1961, in Arlington, Virginia, he was the only son among three children. His family later moved to Minnesota, where he attended St. Paul Academy. He graduated cum laude from Princeton University, where he was a vital member of the track team and set a lasting Ivy League record in shot put.
