His awards include Chevalier des Arts et Lettres

His work has been translated into thirty two languages and sold more than seven and a half million copies. A former chairman of the Society of Authors, he has received four honorary doctorates, a fellowship of King’s College London and is a visiting professor at the University of Kent. He was knighted in 2017.
