An award winning surgeon, Dr. Amy Lightner provides colorectal surgery care to patients at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, California. She is also a Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Scripps Research Institute and runs a translational laboratory there focused on discovering drugs for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Lightner facilitates medical research and oversees staff scientists, research assistants, and postdoctoral fellows.
Dr. Amy Lightner joined Scripps Clinic in January 2023. She previously held several senior roles including director of regenerative medicine and surgery at both the Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic. Over her career, she has received dozens of research grants and published more than 370 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Amy Lightner is a sought-after speaker and has presented before organizations like the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) and the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization.
Dr. Amy Lightner has also contributed significantly to medical research and practice. She is an associate editor and reviewer of several journals and is on the executive committee of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. Additionally, she has served as vice chair of the ASCRS clinical practice guidelines committee and co-chair of S-ECCO, European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization.
Before embarking on her career, Dr. Lightner earned a BA in human biology from Stanford University and an MD from Boston University. She also has an executive MBA from the University of Texas at Austin. In her free time, she enjoys water polo and swimming.
