Alp Yurtsever holds the position of Assistant Professor and heads the Mathematical Programming Group in the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at Umeå University, Sweden, where he is also affiliated with the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP). Before joining Umeå University, he honed his skills as a
postdoctoral researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). With a PhD (2019) from Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Alp has a deep understanding of the challenges facing the field of optimization.
Alp’s research is centred on developing theories and algorithms for optimization problems that arise in data science and machine learning applications. His doctoral thesis, "Scalable Convex Optimization Methods for Semidefinite Programming," received recognition from the EPFL doctoral school program, earning a Thesis Distinction. He is also a recipient of the Early Postdoc Mobility Fellowship from the Swiss National Science Foundation and several research grants from WASP, further highlighting his contributions to the field.
