In 2012, Alan Aderem, Ph.D., became President of the Center for Infectious Disease Research (formerly Seattle BioMed), the largest independent non-profit organization in the U.S. focused solely on infectious disease research. A pioneer in systems biology, Aderem is integrating a holistic approach to CIDR’s research to accelerate towards new drugs
and vaccines.
Aderem has studied the interface between the innate and adaptive immune system for more than 25 years. A native of South Africa, he obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Cape Town and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at The Rockefeller University in the laboratory of Dr. Zanvil Cohn. Dr. Aderem rose through the ranks at The Rockefeller University, becoming head of the laboratory of Signal Transduction in 1991. In 1996, he accepted a professorship of Immunology and Medicine at the University of Washington. In 2000, Aderem co-founded the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) with Drs. Leroy Hood and Ruedi Aebersold. He joined Seattle BioMed in 2011 as Director.
