The UNAID is a joint program of the United Nations on HIV/AIDS that seeks to eradicate HIV through prevention, treatment, care, and support. It works to reduce sexual transmission, preventing HIV among drug users, eliminate new HIV infections among children, avoid TB deaths, close the resource gap, eliminate gender inequalities, eliminate
stigma and discrimination, eliminate travel restrictions, and strengthen HIV integration.
The organization aims to achieve its goal by uniting the efforts of United Nations system, civil society, national governments, the private sector, global institutions, and people living with and affected by HIV; speaking out in solidarity with the people affected by HIV in defense of human dignity, human rights, and gender equality; mobilizing political, technical, scientific, and financial resources; providing agents of change with strategic information; and supporting inclusive country leadership for responses that are integral to and integrated with national health and development efforts.
The UNAID’s cosponsors include the UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP, UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, UN Women, ILO, UNESCO, WHO, and The World Bank.
The UNAID was established in 1996 and is based in Geneva, Switzerland.
