Company Performance Metrics
TestaVec Ltd. is a spin-out company from Brunel University London (BUL) Founded in 2017 it is developing the first standardised and validated testing framework and technology to certify safety of gene therapy modalities. Since 2015 over 1800 gene therapy (GT) trials were initiated or approved worldwide. Licensed products include “Glybera”
(Uniqure), “Kymriah” (Novartis) and “Strimvelis” (GSK) have now entered the market. Treatments for several genetic disorders are available including cancer, however, no standardised platform has been available to test safety, which is concerning following the development of leukaemia in several children treated for X-linked immunodeficiency using GT vectors. The technology developed and led by BUL academic Dr Michaek Themis in collaboration with UCL, KCL, GeneWerk GmbH, Germany, the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control and NMI, Germany won the SBRI, InMutaGene CRACK-IT Challenge funded by GSK and Novartis and NC3Rs. Based on the first human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSc) based platform that evaluates virus vector safety before clinical use and a pre-screen for patient tolerance of gene therapy. TestaVec Ltd provides a comprehensive service that tests GT safety and efficacy intended for academic and pharmaceutical use in the clinic. BUL’s Business Development, Innovation and Commercialisation Team as part of the BUL Research Support and Development Office (RSDO) have led the formation of TestaVec Ltd. and are actively involved in the identification, protection and commercial exploitation of the intellectual property portfolio that underpins the TestaVec Ltd. genotox testing platform. The BUL academic and technical research team led by Dr Themis are supported by the BUL RSDO to seek translation-oriented grant funding and investment to support regulatory approval and certification of the platform and allow TestaVec Ltd. to provide certification services. BUL’s RSDO is also working closely with academic founder Dr Themis to identify and recruit a high-calibre management team to take the new venture forward.
