Taking the Reins provides experiential equine, farm, and garden-based programs that support the personal growth of historically underserved girls. The organization offers instruction at an equestrian facility and in a garden and animal husbandry program, where students learn to care for horses and other farm animals. Through activities such as
grooming, riding, farm chores, and cultivating and cooking food, participants build confidence, leadership, responsibility, and teamwork. Taking the Reins structures programming for youth across different ages, including specialized offerings for younger girls. Its curriculum integrates life skills development with hands-on exposure to nature, animal care, and basic nutrition and cooking. The organization operates on a sliding fee scale supported by donations and grants to maintain access to its programs.
