Engineers Ireland's STEPS programme was established in 2000 to encourage primary and post-primary students to explore the world of science and engineering. The value of the programme has been formally recognised by Government and is a key element of Science Foundation Ireland’s (SFI) Discover Programme, formerly known as Discover, Science and
Engineering. STEPS works in strategic partnership with SFI Discover to achieve its goals listed below. STEPS is managed by Engineers Ireland and is supported by the Department of Education and Skills, Science Foundation Ireland and a number of major engineering employers.
(The name STEPS was originally conceived an acronym for Science, Technology and Engineering Programme for Schools, but the programme is now known solely as STEPS.)
The STEPS programme encourages primary and post-primary students to explore the world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics while also promoting engineering as a career choice.
The STEPS team develop programmes for various audiences which include primary and post-primary students, teachers, guidance counsellors and parents. STEPS materials and activities are continually updated with input from relevant stakeholders.
