PVD can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and limb amputation. Balloon angioplasty (inflating a balloon catheter to unblock arteries) is the most common interventional treatment for PVD. Today, physicians often overinflate the balloon, which puts extra pressure on the arterial wall and causes vessel wall tears and injury. The result: Damaged arteries are blocked again within one year, and there is an increased risk of limb amputation.
