Seeing for Ourselves is a nonprofit that uses participatory photography to help marginalized individuals document their lives and shape their own public narratives. The organization trains participants to create photographic work and self-captioned images, then disseminates these narratives through gallery exhibits, books, films, and social media.
Its programming addresses topics including public housing residents, criminal justice system clients, climate change and youth, and immigration. Seeing for Ourselves develops and runs projects such as Project Lives, In a Whole New Way, Picturing My Climate Future, and Not From These Parts. It partners with schools, public agencies, and other organizations to recruit participants and stage exhibitions, publications, and documentaries. Through these efforts, it aims to influence social policy conversations by centering the perspectives of people directly affected.
