Qtrax is a legal P2P downloading service. In January 2008, Qtrax was overeager to announce it's launch during the Midem conference and misrepresented ongoing negotiations and expired deals with major recording labels as being signed deals. According to Qtrax, the service will have 25 million songs. Downloaded songs have to be played on a
proprietary player buily on the Songbird platform, which is itself built on the Mozilla platform. Songs are wrapped in Microsoft's Windows Media subscription DRM, meaning they cannot be played on iPods. Also ads are displayed during playback.
QTrax competes with music downloading site We7, streaming music sites Pandora, lala, Last.FM, and Imeem and with music search sites such as Seeqpod, Songza, Skreemr, Deezer, and HypeMachine.
