Company Performance Metrics
Dave Salanitro: Founder, Owner, and DesignerPast Role: Oh Boy, A Design Company, Founder and Chief Creative Officer
We were once a company with a unique product and a strong brand. For many years our product was under exclusive license to a well-known publisher. Today we are a Kickstarter and this is a reclamation.
We make notebooks and journals for like-minded others who hold design to a higher standard, those who believe in the ideal, who are not so different
when their feet are on the ground as when their heads are in the clouds. We're here to provide you with an exceptionally crafted product. We're here to help good people advance literacy among disadvantaged youths. We're here to kick up some dust and maybe stir some souls.
Langston Hughes famously wrote: They give to beauty here / The same as everywhere / Adulation, but no care.
There is a certain beauty evident in a thing by the measure of care people invest in it. It’s a simple if/then equation: if we care enough about what we make, if we go all in, put the whole of our capacity into the way we consider an object—the way it catches the light, the grain of its surface, its purpose and its potential—then others too will take notice. No one walks through a cherry orchard in March unmoved. The consideration we give to a simple thing like a notebook is evidence of the care that we pass along.
We are part of an awakening. We prick up our ears at the sound of mail slipping through the slot. A brooding young man writes in verse in a notebook on a park lawn. A woman in the shade of a dogwood composes a letter. The ground is shifting. More people are trying to take better care. We are trying to craft our lives in ways that allow us to recognize beauty and smile more often.
Sixteen years ago Oh Boy Artifacts premiered an ambitious line of 64 unique items-notebooks, journals, books of gift wrap and greeting cards, stationery, and other fine paper products-to abundant acclaim and generous patronage. In December 2017 this site put for sale the remaining first editions of the premiere studio collections—the authentic Artifacts. Scant advertising reached fans, longstanding and new; 70 percent of our flagship notebooks sold out within two days; customers depleted the stock within weeks. The product's legacy and staying power among diehard fans made a good case for rebooting the brand.
Rights to Artifacts reverted to Salanitro in 2016 after 11 years under the exclusive management of a notable publisher. Salanitro went to work, gauging interest, putting out the word, building an online store, setting up manufacturing and distribution channels, and creating new designs and form factors in anticipation of a successful Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. For all the resources we have at the ready, your participation is what makes these efforts count, and each backer's support makes a difference.
Artifacts will debut a re-envisioned collection in spring 2018 on Kickstarter.
