In late 1987, Mitch Dowd, a 24-year-old artist, was wandering along Chapel Street, Prahran, Melbourne, trying to sell hand-painted boxer shorts to help fund an upcoming art
exhibition. Within a week, 150 boxers were sold. After a few weeks, David Jones and Myer Grace Brothers ordered 5,000 units each.
