fashion industry represents an important part of our economies, with a value of more than US$2.5 trillion and employing over 75 million people worldwide. The sector has seen spectacular growth in the past decades, as clothing production more than doubled since the year 2000. Fast retail has led to shorter life cycle for garments, with millions of tons of fabrics piling up in landfills making textile waste one of society’s pressing environmental issues. Three in five consumers now claim environmental impact is an important factor in making purchasing decisions. The Apparel industry technology trends are beginning to reflect this, with the development of new, sustainable fashion technology focused on tackling the causes behind the industry’s struggles. We are currently focused on solutions for 3 major challenges in the fashion industry: Recycling: Before clothing can be recycled, components like labels, zips, buttons, and sewing threads (usually made from polyester) need to be removed which is time and labor-intensive, while adding additional costs. Because recyclers are not able to process unsorted textile waste, less than 1% of this waste is recycled into new clothing. CO2 Emissions: The fashion industry produces about 10 percent of annual global carbon emissions, which is more than all maritime shipping and international flights combined. What's more, fashion's emissions of harmful greenhouse gases are projected to grow by more than 50 percent by 2030. Wastewater: The fashion industry is responsible for over 20% of global wastewater via the processes of dyeing and finishing – the processes by which color and other chemicals are applied to fabrics. InnoFash came together as a group of entrepreneurs and innovators passionate about the fashion industry and tired of its stagnancy. We believe rapid and radical innovation is the only way to overcome the industry’s complacency, and it will take a group of innovators on the outside looking in to do that.
