Digital Ocean was the dominate provider of Media Access Control (MAC) network technology and chipsets for the “wireless Ethernet” standard (IEEE 802.11/WiFi). After creating the technology, chipsets and patents (6) that define this explosive market, Jeff Alholm negotiated license relationships with Lucent and Cisco (then Aironet), before
Digital Ocean was sold to Harris Semiconductor.
In conjunction with its wireless product development, Digital Ocean also engaged in developing products for general sales and specific customers. One line of products was the first handheld computer phones ever developed and sold, integrated Apple’s then Newton handheld computer technology with wireless voice and data technology into a single handheld device. These products won Digital Ocean the hardware product of the year from the Cellular Phone Industry Association (CTIA) and helped to create the multi billion-dollar smart phone industry that exists today.
