“We think it might be the most expensive domain purchase of the year,” he said. The most expensive domain purchase ever was Clover Holdings Ltd.’s $13 million acquisition of Sex.com from Escom LLC in 2010, according to Business Insider.

The name change follows a location change for the company, which helps its customers manage their online reputations. Brand.com moved its headquarters from West Chester, Pa., to Philadelphia’s Washington Square neighborhood earlier this month.

The name change also reflects a change in the business model of the company, which was founded in 2009.

Originally, Zammuto said, most of Brand.com’s customers were individuals or small businesses that wanted help getting negative online information about themselves off of the first pages of search-engine results.

Now, many of its customers are large organizations, such as corporations and government agencies, that want it to do more.

“It’s not enough to suppress negatives about people,” Zammuto said. “It’s really about telling their story in a comprehensive way.”

Online, doing the latter accomplishes the former. By getting a lot of positive information on the Web gets that positive information at the top of Web searches. Brand.com can consign negative information about them to the pages of search responses that most searchers don’t visit.

But since search engines consider how often pages are called up and linked to in determining where to rank them, Brand.com has to make the information it puts online appealing to web surfers.
