Bone Vitae S.A., Warsaw Poland is a start-up enterprise set up to commercialize a patented invention dedicated to detection and monitoring of osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is one of the major problems that elderly people of both sexes face. Only in Europe, the direct medical costs of fractures attributed to osteoporosis run at €36Bn (2000) and are
expected to grow reaching €76,9Bn in 2050).
Bone Vitae has developed and patented a low-cost device detecting early indications of osteoporosis, which yields highly accurate results and can be used frequently and conveniently. Early diagnosis enables early treatment and lifestyle adjustment of patients, which in turn is beneficial for patients and allows for reducing a significant burden on healthcare providers globally.
About the product
Bone Vitae has developed a non-invasive screening device for osteoporosis detection.
The device is based on the innovative method of analysing bone structure that relies on bio-impedance spectroscopic measurements using an apparatus equipped with measuring electrodes. It was originally invented in 2007 by Przemyslaw Los and Marcin Just (who are both currently employed by Bone Vitae SA).
The device is portable and easy to use. Since it is based on bio-impedance measurements of the forearm no ionizing radiation is emitted.
To take the measurement, 4 convenient electrodes linked to the main device are placed on the forearm. The result is presented using a user-friendly interface, with just 3 LEDs lights. This scale reflects the risk of bone fracture. The average measurement time is approximately 30 seconds (including electrodes placement). The device has been designed and manufactured according to safety requirements of IEC60601 regulation and tested in clinical trials.
The trails confirmed very precise results of the tests, with sensitivity of the Bone Vitae method reaching 80-85% and specificity around 80%.
