Frontier Galvanizing, legally known as Frontier Hot-Dip Galvanizing, Inc., has been delivering quality and durability in corrosion protection for over 75 years. Based in Buffalo, the company provides hot-dip galvanizing services to industries that shape essential infrastructure. From bridges and highways to stadiums and utility systems, Frontier
strengthens the backbone of communities, evolving from a small shop into a trusted partner on both domestic and international projects.
The company’s long-standing reputation is grounded in craftsmanship, environmental responsibility, and strong client trust. Recognition for Excellence has been consistent, including the American Galvanizers Association’s Excellence in Hot-Dip Galvanizing Award in 1998 for Franklinville Bridge #31. Achievements like this underscore Frontier’s ability to deliver durable, functional, and visually sound results across a wide range of projects where precision and dependability are vital.
Frontier began operations in 1948 on Austin Street in Buffalo, offering reliable galvanizing solutions to local manufacturers and contractors. Even in its earliest days, the company gained a reputation for dependable artistry and practical service. By the late 1960s, demand for larger facilities became clear as infrastructure needs skyrocketed. This shift signaled the need for new leadership, expanded production, and broader capabilities to meet rising industrial challenges.
In 1970, Ray V. Pierce and shareholders acquired Frontier, setting the stage for significant growth. Ray envisioned a company positioned to lead regionally, capable of handling larger and more complex projects beyond Austin Street. The move to the former General Drop Forge Corp. foundry at 1740 Elmwood Avenue allowed expanded capacity. With improved workflow, Frontier quickly grew into a stronger, more versatile enterprise ready to take on greater challenges.
Ray’s brother, Lewis G. Pierce, soon joined, and together they advanced Frontier’s long-term strategy through strategic land acquisitions. The expanded space increased indoor galvanizing capacity and outdoor storage, enabling the handling of larger assemblies and high-volume orders. Clients grew to include state Departments of Transportation, utilities, and significant energy providers. With a growing workforce, the company earned recognition as a trusted partner for critical public and private infrastructure.
Technological innovation has also been central to Frontier’s progress. The company has invested in continuous flux treatment, acid regeneration, and hex-free paintable passivation to improve consistency, efficiency, and sustainability. Membership in the American Galvanizers Association and Galvanizers Association UK & Ireland ensures access to the latest research and compliance standards, allowing Frontier to adapt to evolving technical demands while prioritizing environmental responsibility.
The company’s portfolio demonstrates its capabilities on prominent projects. Frontier has galvanized steel for the Daytona Motor Speedway, Peace Bridge, Queensboro Bridge, Boston’s Green Line Extension, and the Buffalo Bills’ Highmark Stadium. Internationally, millions of pounds of steel have been shipped to Canada, Australia, Jamaica, New Zealand, and the UK, proving global trust in Frontier’s quality and reinforcing its position within the galvanizing industry.
Today, leadership continues with Lewis G. Pierce and his son, Robert V. Pierce, who balance tradition with innovation. Upholding values instilled by earlier generations, they guide the company with a focus on quality, client trust, and sustainability. Frontier Galvanizing’s long-term vision emphasizes operational Excellence, workplace safety, and environmental stewardship. With a legacy dating back to 1948, the company remains committed to strengthening infrastructure worldwide with precision, durability, and solutions built to stand the test of time.
