Xavier Gil Mur is Full Professor since 1999. He belonged to the Dept. Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering (ETSEIB, UPC) and he is thee current Rector of the International University of Catalonia (UIC) and member of the Health Research Technological Center of Biomaterials at the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry at the UIC. He was the
Director of the in Biomaterials, Biomechanics and Tissue Engineering Research Group, a SGR of the Generalitat of Catalonia Rated 6.97, until October, 2015. He was Vicerrector of Research and innovation (2006-2010) and Science Policy at UPC (2010-2013), Commissioner of the Government of Catalonia for the creation of the Engineering and Innovation Campus Diagonal-Besos and Director of the Technical School of Industrial Engineering of Barcelona (2013-2015).
He has directed more than 35 European and 52 National research projects in the field of the materials science (Biomaterials , Biomechanics and Tissue Engineering). Dr. Gil is a Member of the UNESCO Chair in Biomaterials, author of six books and over 275 international publications indexed involving more than 225 oral presentations at international conferences. Author of 16 patents, five licensed and co- founder Mimetis Biomaterials(open in new window). He was the Director of the Chair UPC - Klockner Implant Dental and won the following awards : Award of the European Society for Biomaterials, Award of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry, Simon Virgil Award, Biomechanics Award Antonio Marcos. Editor of the Journal of Applied Biomechanics and Biomaterials and the Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Medicine and Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry .
His research interests include optimizing the surfaces of biomaterials for hard tissue substitution to enhance the osseointegració and prevent bacterial infection . He is an expert on titanium and its alloys, on the biofunctionalization of metallic biomaterials and on shape memory metals for biomedical applications (orthodontics, orthopedics, cardiovascular stents, ... ). He is also interested in the mechanical properties of the biomaterials and their relationship with the microstructure and chemical composition.
