Formerly a Wall Street attorney, Abeles turned filmmaker when she noticed a disturbing trend: children across the country were struggling with a silent epidemic of school stress and academic burnout. Motivated to change what she saw, Abeles picked up a camera and began a two-year investigation into America’s pressure-cooker education system. Her

endeavor grew into Race to Nowhere, a documentary that uncovers the ways our obsessive achievement culture is undercutting the health, growth and learning of our children. With more than 7,000 screenings and an audience of millions, the film has ignited a grassroots movement bent on restoring student well-being, transforming our education system and redefining success for today’s youth. The film has inspired numerous communities to overhaul policies and practices that encumber student health and meaningful learning. Abeles is currently in production on two new education documentaries featuring educators at the forefront of educational reform. She is also the author of a forthcoming book featuring education change makers to be published by Simon & Schuster and is a contributor to The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today and the Huffington Post. Additional credits include Associate Producer on the Sundance favorite “Miss Representation” and Associate Producer on “Plastic Man: The Artful Life of Jerry Barrish”. A leader in the education space, Abeles is a seasoned public speaker with broadcast interviews on CNN, NPR, NBC, Dr. Phil, Oprah Radio and the Katie Couric show. She has presented at Race to Nowhere screenings across the country, facilitating discussions for audiences with upwards of 2,000 participants. Abeles has also been invited to speak at the corporate headquarters of major corporations, including Google, Pixar and Time Warner, as well as conferences for the Association for Psychological Science, the American Educational Research Association, the Chicago Ideas Festival and the 92nd Street Y.
