President & Founder of SLANG Global an international nonprofit based out of Enugu, Nigeria.
Tenured Professor of Spanish with more than twenty years of professional experience.
Area of Expertise: Spanish language, cultures, and literatures.
Area of Specialization: Afro-Hispanic Studies.
Research Interest: The literature produced by the
descendants of Africans in the Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as literature written about them, and their contributions are at the core of my interest as a scholar, researcher, and teacher. As a teacher, researcher, and scholar, I am in a position to share my vision, and commitment to the study of Afro-Hispanic literature, and to build on the knowledge of other scholars who aggressively champion the study of African descended peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean, and their cultures.
Current Research: In recent years, I approach the study of Afro-Hispanic literature as an introspective look at an African regeneration that emerged as the result of the historical phenomenon of the Transatlantic slavery, in contrast to a protracted/systematic effacement of Africa/African cultures. By this I mean that while in the African Diaspora of Latin America and the Caribbean, Africans who were forcibly brought to the region reacted by shedding the outward manifestation of Africanness to reveal, guard, and develop an African essence. In contrast, Africans in the African continent have been buffeted by extraneous influences. Under colonialism, post colonialism, neocolonialism, and globalization, the African essence has turned chameleon-like to foment the question, who or what is a true African?
