Tom is a General Partner at Next World Capital and leads investments in enterprise applications and the Internet of Things. Prior to joining Next World Capital, he was a Partner on the investment team at Andreessen Horowitz where he was instrumental in several leading enterprise investments including Zenefits, Optimizely, OpenGov, and Dwolla. In addition, he helped shape Andreessen Horowitz’s investment approach to the Internet of Things and investments in emerging categories including Airware (drones), Shapeways (3D printing), and Wearable Intelligence (wearables). Tom has been active on the boards of Airware, Zenefits, and Udacity.
Tom has over 12 years of operating experience, including founding a company and scaling startups to successful outcomes. Prior to Andreessen Horowitz, Tom was Director of Product Management at Wildfire, a SaaS social marketing platform acquired by Google. Prior to joining Wildfire, Tom was Founder and CEO of Renown Labs, a social commerce startup. Before Renown, Tom spent three years at Google, first managing a sales operations team in AdWords and then as a Product Manager on the YouTube monetization team. Prior to business school, as a Product Manager at Autodesk, he launched an enterprise mobile location platform and developer tools to wireless carriers. Tom’s first foray into Silicon Valley was as an Engineer at Silicon Graphics building a virtual reality platform, and then Lead Engineer at Flycode, a video file sharing startup.
Tom holds an M.Eng and BS in Computer Science from MIT and wrote his thesis on machine learning and artificial intelligence. He also holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he did his internship with Apple’s iPod product marketing team. Tom and his wife live in Marin County where he enjoys triathlons, building robots, and has recently started learning Krav Maga.
