Thomas W. Weisel is an investment banker and entrepreneur. He is the founder of Montgomery Securities and Thomas Weisel Partners and is currently the Co-Chairman of Stifel Financial. Thom founded Montgomery Securities in 1978, growing it to a $700m company and selling the Montgomery Asset Management and Investment Bank branches for $1.5bn to what is now Bank of America in 1997. Thomas Weisel Partners, founded in 1999, grew rapidly to $500m in revenue in its first year. TWP was sold in 2010 to Stifel for $450m.
Thom Weisel has been on the US Ski and Snowboard Team Board since 1977 and was the Chairman from 1983-1994. During his tenure he merged the US Ski Association with the US Ski Team, revamping governance, board structure, and funding. Since the merging the US Ski Team has captured more Olympic medals than any other nation. He is also the Founder and Chairman of the US Cycling Foundation Board since 2000. He initiated major organizational changes that have resulted in membership tripling over the last 15 years and a US Cycling endowment of $20m as of 2015.
Thom Weisel graduated from Stanford University with distinction and honors in Economics and obtained his MBA from Harvard University. He continues to support Stanford and Harvard along with local secondary schools in the Bay Area. Thom is also a notable art philanthropist through the Weisel Family Art Foundation. He and has donated over 200 works of Native American art to the DeYoung Museum of Fine Arts. He has gifted or promised works from a large range of prolific artists to the SFMOMA and NYMOMA and currently serves on the board of SFMOMA as Chairman of the Committee on Trustees, a post he has held since 2009.
