Steve Drouilhet is the Founder, President, and CEO of Sustainable Power Systems.
Steve is a creative and innovative systems designer, well versed in electrical, mechanical, and controls engineering disciplines. He holds engineering degrees from Brown University, the Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics, and the University of California at
Berkeley.
He also obtained his Professional Engineer’s License in California in 1984. Steve’s professional experience in the wind energy industry spans 30 years, having begun his career in 1982 working for U.S. Windpower Inc. as a field test engineer on the very first California wind farm in Altamont Pass.
From 1994 to 2002, he worked at the National Wind Technology Center (NWTC) at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), where he led NREL’s program in wind-diesel hybrid system research and development and was the principal designer of the high penetration wind-diesel power system implemented in the arctic village of Wales, Alaska. While enjoying the research and his colleagues at the national laboratory, Steve knew that he was destined to lead an enterprise of his own.
In 2002, Steve left NREL to form Sustainable Automation, Inc., which was reorganized as Sustainable Power Systems in 2012. When not designing and promoting renewable energy microgrids, Steve is often cycling, skiing, hiking, or playing music.
