Shay is OmniEarth’s lead data scientist and heads the analytics team. She applies her background in computational astrophysics to evaluate remotely-sensed imagery through deep-learning and machine-learning techniques – transforming bits and pixels into actionable intelligence. Her focus is on automating imagery land-classification and statistical
prediction, at scale in the cloud, to support a number of OmniEarth’s analytics products. Her methods have achieved 95% accuracy in distinguishing parcel features such as trees, turf, pools, solar panels, and man-made structures. Shay is also an adjunct physics lecturer at UMBC and, prior to OmniEarth, she held positions at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She holds a PhD in astronomy from the University of Texas at Austin.
