Samuel Higginbottom is a retired executive officer of Rolls Royce, Inc. (an aircraft engine manufacturer), where he served as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer from 1974 to 1986.
Samuel was the Chairman of the Columbia University Board of Trustees from 1986 until 1989, having served as trustee starting in 1982. Samuel was
President, Chief Operating Officer and a Director of Eastern Airlines, Inc., from 1970 to 1973 and served in various other executive capacities with that company from 1964 to 1969.
Samuel was a Director of British Aerospace Holdings, Inc., an aircraft manufacturer, from 1986 to 1999 and was a Director of AmeriFirst Bank from 1986 to 1991. Samuel was appointed an Honorary Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II.
Samuel served in World War II, where he received a Bronze Star and achieved the rank of Captain. Samuel is a Trustee Emeritus of St. Thomas University, Miami, Florida. Samuel is considered an “independent” director under NYSE rules.
Samuel’s extensive experience in the airline and aviation industries from his years of senior management allow him to add considerable substance to the Board’s discussions and evaluation of the Company’s business, especially in strategic and operational issues and initiatives.
The Board also believes Samuel’s lengthy business career provides the Board with an important and stable long term perspective. Due to his deep relationships in the airline and aerospace industries, Samuel has also been instrumental in assisting the Company in establishing important relationships throughout his tenure on the Board.
