Rob Newton grew up in an Army family spending time in California, Texas, 2 different bases in Germany, and finished in Northern New York where he graduated high school. From there he was off to SUNY Potsdam to study mathematics. Upon graduating from Potsdam he knew he needed long sunny days and warm weather and so he went to graduate school at the
University of Florida.
While at Florida he found what he was looking for, beautiful weather, beaches, and algebraic topology. He found manifolds to be an interesting blend of exotic spaces, yet well-behaved spaces and finished his PhD by analyzing a topological invariant that nobody can pronounce. The market for academics is pretty rough right now and so he was off to teach at an independent school.
