Being a young Chicago kid at the age of 10 Paul Alter was playing around with other kids in the neighborhood, dreaming of growing up and become one of the biggest and most popular TV personalities. Before involving in the TV career, Alter graduating on Acting & Visual Art from the Yale School of Drama. He also studied piano with Teddy Wilson
from the Benny Goodman Quartet. It was 1969 when Paul Alter got a chance to enter the world of music composers. It was a task that required him to compose music for ‘To Tell the Truth.’
Starting from 1950, Paul Alter began entering in the world of show directors and producers. In those years Alter began working in the entertainment industry as a director of ‘Beat the Clock.’ After this he continued to work with Mark Goodson-Bill Todman Productions which cooperation in the following decades grew into a long-lasting connection. From this cooperation came out projects like ‘What's My Line?,’ ‘I've Got a Secret,’ ‘To Tell the Truth,’ ‘The Price Is Right,’ ‘Family Feud’ and other. More than 60 TV shows went live during the time Paul Alter Paul cooperated with Goodson-Todman Productions.
Other things that made Paul Alter notable was his lawsuit from 1993 against the Walt Disney Co. This process gained so much attention that all magazines were covering the development of the event. At the end he settled with Disney for a total of $300,000.
Starting in 1976 and in the next 10 seasons of ABC TV show ‘Family Feud’ Paul Alter directed the original version of this TV series. Working on this is what brought him many awards and recognition. As a result of his work and talent, in 1982 Paul Alter was awarded with Daytime Emmy award. In 1996 he won the second Emmy award for ‘The Price Is Right’.
Paul Alter decided to step down from TV directing and producing and retire from the TV. This happened in 2000 following his departure from ‘The Price Is Right,’ a TV show he’s been directing since 1986. Next, Paul Alter returned to composing music and writing songs. He wrote the lyrics for the album ‘The True Spirit of Christmas’. On June 11, 2011 at the age of 89 Paul Alter died of natural causes in his home in Los Angeles, California.
