Joel Carter is most well known for creating the award winning HEXBUG Micro Robotic Creatures brand and the VEX Robotics Design System and taking both brands global. Carter gained valuable experience working with electronics factories in China when he managed the $1B private label brand portfolio of RadioShack Corporation. He built the licensing
function within RadioShack and made deals with all the major studios including Disney, Universal, MGM, Nickelodeon and others.
After exiting VEX and HEXBUG in 2012, Carter co-founded BlinkFX, a startup that created a platform for wireless control of low power battery operated wearables and devices. He also served as VP Business Development for Truaxis, a Silicon Valley AI startup that was acquired by MasterCard. Beginning in 2019, Carter served as Managing Partner of the Softeq Venture Fund which invested in 65 early-stage startups. In 2023, he stepped into the role of General Partner of Venture Builder VC, a firm that combines venture funding with corporate accelerator programs for deep due diligence. Venture Builder VC operates an energy accelerator in partnership with oil & gas giant NOV and their customers including ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, Aramco, Oxy, TotalEnergies, Murphy Oil and others.
Carter is an avid supporter of technical literacy, STEM education, creativity and innovation in education globally.
