For more than 40 years, he has been a leader in Otology/Neurotology (the science of the ear and skull base), developing surgical and diagnostic procedures, inventing instruments (such as the facial nerve monitor/stimulator), teaching medical students, residents, and fellows, and helping people improve their quality of life. Dr.
Silverstein was born in Philadelphia and obtained his BS from Dickinson College (cum laude), as well as his MS (in physiology) and MD from Temple University Medical School. Before arriving in Sarasota in 1973, he worked as an associate professor and director of the Walker Biochemistry Research Laboratory at Harvard University Medical School, as well as an associate professor and director of the Otological Research Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. Dr. Silverstein established the Ear Research Foundation in 1979. He is now the company's president as well as its Medical Director. Dr. Silverstein is an active researcher who has presented at numerous international medical conferences and is the author of over 248 scientific papers, textbook chapters, and videos. The 2nd Howard P. House Award for Excellence in Ear Surgery and the 10th Prosper Meniere Society Gold Medal Honor Award are among his many distinctions and awards.
