Fabien Riggall created Future Shorts in 2003 as a platform for innovative new filmmakers to preview their work. His passion and vision has driven the festival to become the biggest short-film festival of it’s kind. Recognizing a growing desire from cinemagoers for an experience that reaches beyond that of conveyor-belt multiplexes, Fabien set up
Future Cinema in 2005, which aimed to create ultra-immersive environments where the audience lives and breathes the film in site-specific locations.
These ideas evolved to form Secret Cinema in 2007, which creates immersive experiences around films blurring the relationship between the audience and the performance whilst not revealing the film or the location with over 300,000 having attended since its launch.
Marking the future of Secret Cinema, the Future Cinema strand will now fall under ‘Secret Cinema Presents’ which will present cult classics and new releases, revealing the film prior to the event but keeping the location secret. Secret Cinema Tell No One will continue creating experiences where both the film and the location are kept secret.
The organisation’s most recent production, Back to the Future had 84,000 audience attending creating a record for the biggest live cinema event to date.
Secret Cinema is now working with studios and distributors to create alternative release models for their films.
