Dr. Brian Strahl, a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine, researches the role of histone post-translational modifications in regulating the structure and function of chromatin. Brian Strahl leads a team of 19 associates and students in investigating how enzymes and

proteins that write, erase and read histone post-translational modifications function to regulate gene expression and DNA repair. One area of particular interest is how chromatin intersects with the RNA polymerase II transcription process. His research has uncovered the key role that several histone-modifying enzymes play in regulating gene transcription and organizing chromatin structure. Brian D. Strahl's discoveries have recently appeared in a number of peer-reviewed journals, including Epigenomics, The Journal of Biological Chemistry, Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, Genes and Development, and The Journal of Molecular Biology.

In addition to research, Brian Strahl is the Vice Chair in his home department and teaches an advanced molecular genetics course at UNC on gene expression and epigenetics (BIOC 632). Brian also participates in the summer Biophysics course and teaches a lecture about chromatin and how our genome regulates cell function and cell fate.
