Sheltowee Trace Association is a nonprofit organization that protects, preserves, and promotes the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail. The association coordinates volunteer trail maintenance, trail adoption programs, and infrastructure projects such as stairs, bridges, and shelters to keep the trail open and accessible. It organizes
recreation programs including the Hiker Challenge, guided and organized hikes, and shuttle coordination to support section and thru‑hikers. Sheltowee Trace Association also produces and sells planning resources such as the Sheltowee Trace Guidebook, print maps, STNRT map sets, wall maps, and access to the Sheltowee Trace guide within the FarOut mobile app. Additional activities include trail alerts, mapping updates, campground and resupply information, and a Cave Run Lake chapter that focuses on the northern part of the trail. Its funding comes from memberships, donations, designated funds, and partner programs.
