Full Circle Technologies has developed a chemical-mechanical process to take old tires free of steel and fiber, devulcanize and turn it back into soft pliable rubber that retains up to 80% of its elastic recovery, tensile strength and performance properties. The process is clean and environmentally friendly, does not create any emissions, effluent
or byproducts of any kind. The finished product is a round, devulcanized rubber pellet called Ecorphalt whose main market is the asphalt pavement industry, where it is added to liquid asphalt to make a less brittle, more flexible, and longer lasting road surface.
Many states have passed legislation that requires old tires to be used in asphalt pavements, In addition, the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) of 1991, Section 1038 mandated the use of rubber modified asphalt pavements in a certain portion of federally funded highway projects begun after 1995 with continuous increases in subsequent years.
The Ecorphalt product will be sold to petroleum terminal companies. State Departments of Transportation (DOT), however, must approve any raw material product in asphalt pavements.
